When I work with leaders, I’m a huge believer in the power of feedback, particularly positive feedback for driving high performance, engagement, and staff retention.

One thing a lot of leaders do when giving feedback is…, they give very general feedback.

Telling someone that they are fantastic, might have two seconds of a positive impact, but when that person walks away they are wondering ‘Well what am I fantastic for?’!

I call that the ‘Jam Doughnut Effect’, it tastes nice when you eat it, but it has no nutritional value.

So as a leader, the next time you’re giving feedback to your key stakeholders, be specific and to the point because that’s the kind of feedback that will really impact the key people that you work with.
